iPads hurt curious kids

Reminder: iPads are big iPhones! They have browsers, FaceTime, texting, social media, Roblox, YouTube, and more. The only app I trust on iPads and iPhones to help curious kids ask their curious questions is ANGELQ.

Another amazing parent talk in Chicago was about to begin! We always arrive an hour early to ensure the tech works as expected. I love the quiet moments before parents arrive when I can ponder and pray about the evening.

Like most K-8 schools, children have access to a lot of technology at home. Although more and more families are delaying smartphones and social media, I fielded multiple questions about:

  • Roblox - Can it be played safely?
  • iPads - What are the biggest risks?
  • Snapchat - Help! Can I see what my kid sends?
  • AI in class - Should schools be using it at all?
  • YouTube - Why is it so confusing to set up properly?

It was an engaging 90 minutes! Over the past two weeks, we've answered questions like these in talks across multiple states, including IL, CA, TN, NY, TX, MI, CO, and NJ. Here's what we say:

Q: Roblox: Can it be played safely?โ€‹
โ€‹A: Maybe. But in my perfect world, I don't want any elementary school kids roaming around in Roblox with 40M games and 100M people. Please learn everything you can about it (here's our comprehensive write-up) before deciding.

Q: iPads - What are the biggest risks?โ€‹
โ€‹A: Never forget that iPads are just big iPhones with almost identical features! The biggest risk is accidental exposure to adult content through endless backdoors. There's only one app (US, CAN, MX) I trust for safe iPad or iPhone exploration - AngelQ. It was created by an awesome dad who wanted his own kids to explore and learn, without the baggage of Google, Safari, and YouTube.

Here's what makes AngelQ unique:

  • A safe browser for ages 5-12, or those with special needs (like my son!).
  • It fully replaces Safari, Google, and Chrome.
  • Made specifically for iPads and iPhones.
  • It uses a proprietary YouTube filter!
  • It gives parents control while letting kids explore.
  • No tracking, algorithms, or inappropriate content.

Q: Snapchat - Help! Can I see what my kid sends?โ€‹
โ€‹A: Not on iPhones. Snapchat doesn't allow any software to see Snaps (our app review explains). Android is a little different, where Bark and Covenant Eyes can see some. Snapchat is one of the worst apps for kids.

Q: AI in class - Should schools be using it at all?
A:
AI has amazing uses for teachers. AI literacy (learning about AI) should begin early. But elementary kids don't need to use it. Not yet. Maybe some in middle school. But only after someone at the school has vetted any app or website that's used in the classroom.

Q: YouTube - Why is it so confusing to set up properly?
A:
Millions of parents agree with you! I swear no one at Google has children. We've created a massive YouTube guide because there are so many variables. Restricted Mode is key. But even then, it's never fully "safe."

Parenting with you!
