💙 Remember Social Media Victims

The PYE Download: Resource Edition!

Two items to share as we continue enjoying the sunshine:

  1. Go into the Bank (Model digital health)
  2. Today is Social Media Victims Awareness Day (June 23)

Go into the Bank!

I recently had a deposit to make.

Nothing complicated. A check. The kind of transaction that takes 47 seconds at an ATM. Electronic submission would have made it even faster — photograph both sides, tap submit, done.

I went inside instead.

This is where I want to speak directly to parents.

You are the most powerful force in your child’s formation. Not the algorithm, not the influencer, not the phone. You. And one of the most countercultural, counter-algorithmic things you can do is model a life in which you choose the slower, richer option on purpose.

We need to put down the phone. Then…

Go into the bank. Go to the farmers’ market instead of Instacart, even once a month. Go through the line in the grocery store with a teen at the register. She might need your smile. Learn the name of the person behind the counter at your dry cleaner. Ask the woman at the convenience store what she hopes to do this weekend. When your kids are with you, narrate it. “I’m going to say hi to Frank; he’s been here since before you were born.” Let them see you light up during a spontaneous conversation.

Let them see that a “wasted” ten minutes at a bank counter can produce a story worth telling at dinner.

You are teaching them what human life looks like. You are showing them what to reach for.

Social Media Victims Remembrance Day

Today, June 23rd, marks a date that shouldn’t be on any calendar.

Last year, on Capitol Hill, 245 placards of children and young people lost to social media harms were laid out for the world to see.

Sextortion. Drug poisoning. Cyberbullying. Social media challenges. When you see it all in one place, there is no looking away. No more excuses from Big Tech.

This day was founded by two heroes, with a tragic common story — Amy Neville and Kristin Bride. They both lost sons - Alexander and Carson - to harm experienced on Snapchat on the same day: June 23, 2020. Instead of staying silent in their grief, they have been fighting for our children ever since.

Today is a call for policymakers to step up now. The time for debate is over. A court of law has spoken: these platforms were designed to be addictive. Kids paid the price.

To every family represented by this day, I am so sorry. I will grieve with you today in Washington, and we will keep fighting.

📲 Parents — use this moment. #delayistheway (have courage!). Talk to your kids tonight about what they're seeing online and who they're talking to. The conversation you keep putting off might be the most important one you have this summer.

Donate to our work.

Parenting with you,

The PYE Download: We're Published! Ten years ago, Protect Young Eyes was just a website to help families at our church. I never planned to write a book. But then the messages started coming — and they never stopped: “My 15-year-old son is asking to play Fortnite. It seems that many of his new friends are playing it, and he’d like to connect with them. He’s a responsible kid. How do we decide?” “My three young children were looking up an innocent dance with their cousin, and the search spit...
